Some Distant Memory – Sports Day

Late October means school sports days taking place at all the local elementary schools. Usually held at the weekend they are being held during the week this year due to the pandemic.

I never got excited about sports days when I was a kid. I didn’t like the competition and still don’t really – I’m not really a team person. I once remember being part of the 800 metre relay team (the green Arrow team named after the River Arrow in Worcestershire) and was nervous for days before.

But there’s joy to be found in the simple competition between the reds and the whites. The kids go crazy for it and you can hear them cheering from all corners of the city. Of course it doesn’t matter who wins only that the kids do their best.
