Endoji shopping street (円頓寺商店街), located near the banks of the Horikawa River and a stone’s throw from Nagoya and Marunouchi stations, appeared run-down and lacked a promising future the last time I walked its streets. However, alongside Atsuta, I’ve always considered it the epitome of authentic Nagoya (whatever that means). Surprisingly, on my recent visit, signs of revitalisation were evident.
Although some shops remained shuttered, probably due to my visit before 11 am, the area’s heart was, at the very least, beating. Back streets had undergone refurbishment, boasting some fancy restaurants, and elderly locals frequented supermarkets, while young students headed to classes at Nagoya Beauty College. Tourists also wandered casually.
I should visit Endoji a lot more over the coming months to uncover any hidden gems easily missed on a first visit. It is an area of Nagoya that can be walked over and over again and always reveal something new.
