Below you will find a list of useful expressions in Japanese related to cycling. This is by no means a comprehensive list and we will be adding more words and phrases regularly. Suggestions are always welcome.

Bicycle problems & Shopping

I’ve punctured – panku shite shimaimashita – パンクしてしまいました。

My chain has snapped – Chain ga kowarete shimaimashita – チェーンが壊れてしまいました。

(When you want to buy something at a bicycle shop) I want to buy a/an (item) – (item) wo kaitai ndesu ga. – (item) を買いたいんですが。

Do you have any (item)? – (item) arimasu ka? – (item) ありますか

Bicycle equipment

Bike bag (for trains) – rinko baggu – 輪行バッグ

Brakes – Bureeki – ブレーキ

Frame – Furemu -フレーム

Gears – Hensoku – 変速

Tyres – Taiya – タイヤ

Wheels – Howeeru – ホィール (many Japanese will use ‘tyre’ when referring to bicycle wheels.)
Puncture repair kit – panku shuri kitto – パンク修理キット

Inner tube – Inna chubu – インナーチューブ

Campsites, Hotels and Guest houses

How much for one night? Ippaku ikura desu ka? 一泊、いくらですか
Does the campsite have showers? kyanpujou niwa shower mo arimasu ka? キャンプ場にはシャワーもありますか
Where is the hot spring? – Onsen wa doko desu ka? 温泉はどこですか

Directions, Locations & Weather

How do I get to (place) ?  (place) e dou yatte ikeba ii desu ka? (place)へどうやって行けばいいですか
Is there a bike shop near here? – Chikaku ni jitenshaya arimasu ka? 近くに自転車屋ありますか?
North – kita – 北

South – minami – 南

East – higashi – 東

West – nishi – 西
Is the road busy? – michi wa konndeimasu ka? – 道は混んでいますか

Is this road safe? – kono michi ha anzen desu ka? – この道は安全ですか

Where does this road lead? – Kono michi ni iku to doko ni tsukimasu ka – この道に行くとどこに着きますか。

Mountain road – yama michi – 山道
Forest road – rindo – 林道
Mountain – yama – 山
Ocean/sea – umi – 海
A climb (up a mountain or hill by bicycle/car) – noborizaka – 上り坂
A descent (down a mountain or hill by bicycle/car) – kudarizaka – 下り坂
Train station – eki – 駅
Going too fast – supiido wo dashi sugi – スピードを出しすぎ
Going too slow – supiido ga o-so sugi -スピードが遅すぎ
It’s too hot – atsu sugiru! – 暑すぎる
It’s too cold – samu sugiru! – 寒すぎる
It’s too windy – kaze ga tsuyo sugiru! – 風が強すぎる

I’m tired – tsukaremashita – 疲れました。

I don’t want to continue – tsuzuketakunai desu – 続けたくないです

I feel great! – choushi ga ii – 調子がいい
